Amie Peters FMII 
Head of Direct Mail, An Post
 
Since joining An Post in 2008, Amie has built An Post’s Mail Media Unit, and brought it to the forefront of marketing in Ireland. She has played a central role in creating a new place for Direct Mail in the media landscape, underling the relevance and innovative positioning to the medium through targeted campaigns, many of them award winning. Marketers across Ireland are consequently more aware of the media integration and revenue building opportunities that Direct Mail can bring, adding value to their own and of course An Post’s bottom line. Amie has worked in marketing for over 10 years. She previously worked with DMA, where she held the position of Client Services Director, working with some of Ireland's leading brands in helping them with their marketing and winning numerous awards along the way. Amie holds a BBUS, specialising in IT and International Business from Auckland University of Technology in New Zealand. Amie has been a member of the Marketing Institute of Ireland since 2005, and she is on the board of the Irish Direct Marketing Association.
 
 
Ann O’Dea FMII 
Director, Whitespace Publishing Group

Ann O’Dea is a founder-director of Whitespace Publishing Group, and is Editor-in-chief of Business & Leadership, the group’s executive publishing arm, whose publications include businessandleadership.com, Ireland’s online resource for business and management news, and print magazines such as Irish Director and Innovation Ireland Review, as well as Marketing Age, the definitive voice of the marketing industry in Ireland. In addition to developing the group’s executive magazines, Ann has spent much of the last decade concentrating on the group’s strategy in new media, and was responsible for the development of siliconrepublic.com back in 2002, today Ireland’s leading technology website. Originally a Masters graduate in Arts, Ann spent many years in France, lecturing at both the Law and Arts faculties at L’Université de Rouen. On her return to Ireland she worked as Group Deputy Editor, Banking Titles, at Lafferty Publications before launching a freelance career which saw her editing and writing for many of Ireland’s leading newspapers and magazines, including The Irish Times, The Irish Independent, Sunday Tribune, and Business & Finance.
 
 
   
Dr. Declan J. Fleming FMII
Head of Marketing, NUI Galway
 
Dr. Declan J. Fleming is Head of Marketing at NUI Galway, having graduated with a B.Comm. (Hons), and MBS (Hons) from NUI Galway, and a PhD from Manchester Business School at the University of Manchester.  Before joining NUI Galway, Declan lectured in IT Tralee and GMIT.  He has wide teaching experience at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, including Executive MBA and international teaching experience with universities in Germany, Portugal, Hungary, Russia and Greece.  Declan is programme director for a marketing programmes at masters level and supervisor of several PhD students in NUI Galway.  He also acts as an external examiner for many third level colleges in Ireland. Over the years he has contributed to professional and continuing education courses of the Marketing Institute of Ireland as well as other bodies such as the Irish Management Institute and the Institute of Public Administration. Declan is co-author of the leading Irish third-level textbook ‘Marketing Research in Ireland, Theory and Practice’, now in its third edition. Declan has been an active member of the Marketing Institute of Ireland for many years.
 
 
 
Ed McDonald FMII
Chief Executive, Association of Advertisers in Ireland
 
Ed McDonald is Chief Executive of the Association of Advertisers in Ireland, where he is active in promoting the role of advertising and commercial communications, dealing with various regulatory authorities, and representing Ireland at the World Federation of Advertisers. Ed is also Director of the Advertising Standards Authority of Ireland and of Central Copy Clearance Ireland Ltd. Ed spent 17 years with IDA Ireland, including a period in the USA.  He then worked in PR with Hill & Knowlton, part of the JWT Group, and then as special advisor to the Minister for Food. Then after 7 years leading the Marketing and HR functions at Gunne Estate Agents, Ed became Chief Executive of The Henry Street Mary Street Partnership in Dublin. He then became Chief Executive of the Marketing Institute. Ed is a BA graduate of UCD in Economics and Philosophy, and he also holds a Master of Business Studies degree from Liverpool John Moores University and the Certified Diploma in Accounting & Finance from the Association of Certified Accountants. He studied Arbitration Law at UCD and he is a Fellow of both the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and the Irish Auctioneers & Valuers Institute. 
 
 
  
 
Geoff Lyons FMII
Group Marketing Manager, Independent Newspapers Ireland
 
Geoff Lyons is Group Marketing Manager at Independent Newspapers Ireland, where he heads up the Marketing function for the group. He joined the group in 1999, and he has worked in all commercial departments of the newspaper business from Advertising Sales, Advertising Sales Management and Brand Management. Geoff has continually adopted a very innovative approach to driving newspaper sales by building brand loyal readers, with an unrelenting focus on promoting the written word. He has developed a stream of marketing initiatives that have helped position Independent Newspapers’ brands as the market leaders and the most effective advertising platforms nationwide. As a result, Independent Newspapers have continually led the way year on year in one of the most competitive newspaper markets in the world with the number one circulation and readership numbers in the country. Geoff has scooped two All Ireland Marketing Awards for the Irish Independent’s efforts in promoting the Irish Language through their newspapers and also awards from Business to Arts and the World Association of Newspapers. Geoff holds a BA in Economics from UCD and MSc in Marketing from the Dublin Institute of Technology.
 
 
 
Gerard O’Neill FMII
Chairman, Amárach Research
 
Gerard O’Neill is Chairman of Amárach Research, one of Ireland’s leading independent market research agencies. Gerard is an economist by training, and he received an MSc (Econ) from the London School of Economics in 1983. After a period working at The Henley Centre for Forecasting in London, Gerard became business planning manager in An Post, before setting up Henley Centre Ireland. Subsequently re-named Amárach Consulting, the company became the first Irish agency to establish an overseas operation. Gerard has written extensively on social, economic and technological trends and their marketing implications. His book 2016: A New Proclamation for a New Generation, was recently published by Mercier Press. Gerard is a director of the Irish Direct Marketing Association. He is also a member of the Irish Taxation Institute's Strategic Policy Group, and was recently appointed to the external advisory board of UCD's Institute of Food & Health. He speaks and writes regularly on the business impact of economic and social change. He blogs regularly at turbulenceahead.com.
 
 
 
John Trainor FMII
Managing Director, Onside
 
John Trainor is founder and Managing Director of Onside, a leading Dublin agency specialising is research and consulting services within sponsorship and the wider marketing communications industry in Ireland. He has specific ongoing strategic input to over one-third of all sponsorship spend in the Irish market through work with many of Ireland’s (and Europe’s) premier sponsors. John has more than 12 years experience of working with sponsors across multiple sectors from alcohol to telcos, financial institutions to automobiles, and has worked for clients on many major local and global properties from The GAA Senior Championships to Aviva Stadium, and the FIFA World Cup to the Volvo Ocean Race. He is a regular author and speaker on sponsorship both nationally & internationally. His sound understanding of the issues and challenges facing both sponsors and rights-holders has led to John being regularly invited to deliver training, present at conferences internationally and comment on sponsorship issues in the media as well as being invited to judge sponsorship related awards in Ireland and Europe. John is also the elected Irish Board Member of the European Sponsorship Association.
 
 
 
 
Mark Mortell FMII
Director, Fleishman-Hillard
 
Mark Mortell is a Director of international communications consultants Fleishman-Hillard, where he provides strategic communications counsel to clients here in Ireland and across Europe. Mark has been a career marketer with widespread experience in consumer marketing, financial services, tourism and travel. He began his career as a Brand Manager with the Guinness Group and he had a brief stint in C&C working on a portfolio of soft drink brands. He later became Marketing Director for Ballygowan Spring Water working in the domestic, European and US markets. He was Marketing Manager for confectionary brands at Mars, and moved into Financial Services as Head of Marketing at Bank of Ireland Group’s Life and Pensions business. He was Commercial Director at Aer Lingus, and spent a period with the McConnells Group. As Chairman of Bord Fáilte, Mark was the youngest ever chairman of a state board. Mark is a graduate of Dublin City University with a BBS degree specialising in Marketing. He has been a member of the Marketing Institute of Ireland since 1984. He is also a member of the Public Relations Institute of Ireland. For the last three and a half years he has presented Newstalk’s weekly business programme “Down to Business”. 
 
 
 
 
Meadhbh Quinn FMII 
Head of Brand and Marketing Communications, Meteor
 
Meadhbh Quinn is Head of Brand and Marketing Communications with Meteor Mobile Communications. Since joining Meteor in 2006 she has played an instrumental role in growing the firm’s market share from 10% to 20%, and making it one of Ireland’s youth brand success stories. Meadhbh previously ran her own successful brand and marketing consultancy, MQ Marketing, from 2001 to 2006, working across a range of different sectors including Financial Services, Media, IT and FMCG. Between 1992 and 2000 Meadhbh worked as Sponsorship Manager with Irish Permanent (now permanent tsb), Group Promotions Manager for Independent Newspapers and Sales and Marketing Manager for iVenus.com, a Smurfit owned female online portal site. Meadhbh holds an honours degree in Economics and History from UCD. She has been an active member of the Marketing Institute of Ireland, serving on various committees, including a number of years on the Council, and on the Executive Committee.
 
 
 
Michael Barry FMII 
Managing Director, Barry & Fitzwilliam
 
Michael Barry has made a very significant contribution to Irish business life as an entrepreneur, marketer and business leader. He founded and built Barry and Fitzwilliam into a multi-million euro company, creating Ireland's largest independent drinks distribution company, importing, warehousing, marketing and distributing branded drinks. Michael qualified as a Certified Public Accountant in 1978. He took a holistic view of business and saw the true value of marketing as a business driver, becoming a member of the Marketing Institute of Ireland in 1987. His career commenced at Midleton Worsted Mills in Cork, and Michael then secured a role at Murphys Brewery. He built his experience there, including a promotion, and in 1982 he founded Barry’s Wines & Spirits. He merged the firm with Fitzwilliam McCullagh, creating Barry & Fitzwilliam Ltd. In 1990, operating in Cork and Dublin, and Michael became Managing Director. In 2007, Michael was named Cork Businessman of the Year. Michael is a strong supporter and sponsor of events, charities and causes.
 
 
 
Rosita Wolfe FMII
Head of Marketing and Communications, National Concert Hall
 
Rosita has positioned Ireland’s most popular venue as a leading player in the music industry internationally. Over the last few years, the National Concert Hall has experienced record audiences and capacities, expanded and broadened its range of programming and grown its presence as a cultural leader and music educator in Ireland. Awards in marketing, public relations, internet and customer service are an endorsement of this fact. Rosita previously worked for Eircom as a market analyst in the mergers and acquisitions team, moving on to work in international marketing for Eircom’s operations. She has consulted for a range of companies in the telecoms, IT and services sector. An honours marketing graduate of Dublin Institute of Technology, Rosita also holds a Masters in Commerce from University College Dublin and is a graduate member of The Marketing Institute of Ireland. She has published a number of papers in the fields of marketing, communications and sponsorship and has presented at a range of international conferences.
 
 

 

The Pat Cahill Award

 
Pat CahillThe Pat Cahill Award was created by the Marketing Institute of Ireland to recognise the exceptional contribution of individual members to the work of the Institute. The award also honours the memory of our colleague and chairman, who died tragically in a car accident in 2005 aged 38.
 
The 2010 recipient of the Pat Cahill Award is Jarlath Jennings.
 
 
 
  
 
Jarlath Jennings has worked in professional marketing for over three decades. He worked with McConnells for over 25 years, most recently as managing director, and was appointed to the board in 1986. He joined the board of McConnells PR in 1995. Jarlath previously worked for CPC/Knorr (now part of Unilever), AC Nielsen Market Research and Kodak. He holds a BSc in Marketing from Trinity College, and the Diploma in Advanced Marketing Studies from Dublin Institute of Technology. He also holds the graduateship qualification of The Marketing Institute of Ireland. Jarlath first joined the Institute in 1977 and he was made a fellow in 2001. He has held office in the Institute on a number of occasions, and was chairman in 2007-08, and during his tenure the organisation adopted a fundamental new governance structure.
