New Fellows Announced 

The Board of the Marketing Institute of Ireland has announced the names of eleven members who are to be conferred with the highest category of membership, that of Fellow of the Institute. Fellowship is awarded in recognition of a members contribution to marketing and/or to the work of the Institute itself. The new Fellows for 2009 are:

It has also been announced that Tim McNulty MMII is to receive the 2009 Pat Cahill Award.




 

Conor CarmodyConor Carmody is Marketing Director at Meteor Mobile Communications and has previously held a number of marketing and general management roles over the last two decades.Conor started his career in general management and worked for Irish retailers including Penneys and Superquinn in a number of commercial roles. In the early 1990s Conor worked in Moscow where he established and developed a number of High Street retail outlets as part of the first wave of retail development in Russia. On returning to Ireland in 1998 Conor joined Eircom in a retail sales management role to develop the retail proposition. He subsequently joined Meteor in 2000. As part of the launch team he helped develop the brand, channels and propositions to bring Meteor to market in 2001. Since then Conor has held a number of senior management roles including that of Sales and Marketing Director. Conor completed his Executive MBA at Smurfit Business School in 2009.
 

 
Stuart FogartyStuart Fogarty is a major figure in the world of advertising in Ireland. He is a shareholder in McConnells integrated, the largest communications group in Ireland (incorporating AFA O’Meara and MCM). Stuart is a Fellow and past President of The Institute of Advertising Practitioners (IAPI), former Council member of The Publicity Club, and a former Chairman of The Advertising Press Club. He was also a founder of Club Internet (floated NASDAQ March 2000) and the founder of internet advertising agency, ICAN. Stuart’s links with the Marketing Institute of Ireland go back many years. His late father Aubrey (deceased 2002) was Chairman of the Institute and President of The Rotary Club and The Publicity Club. He was also the founder of ‘Irish Marketing Journal’ IMJ. Stuart joined the Marketing Institute of Ireland in 1989, and he has served on Council and on the Executive Committee.
 

 

 

Kate Uí Ghallachóir

Kate Uí Ghallachóir is Head of the School of Marketing in the Faculty of Business at Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT). DIT is the largest marketing school in Ireland or Britain, and it’s a long-time education partner of the Marketing Institute of Ireland. Kate teaches on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and her research is in the area of the management of strategic alliances. As Head of School she has hosted the prestigious Academy of Marketing conference, the Irish Marketing Teachers Association and the Academy of Management conferences. She has been editor of special issue the Journal of Marketing Management. Kate is currently completing her doctorate at Queen’s University Belfast. She has been a member of the Marketing Institute of Ireland since 1995.
 

 
 

 
 Deirdre Houlihan
Deirdre Houlihan has been at the forefront of tourism and hospitality marketing for a decade. Her current role is Group Marketing & Administration Manager with FBD Hotels Ireland, with responsibility for marketing the four FBD-owned hotels in Ireland – Faithlegg House Hotel, Tower Hotel Waterford, Castleknock Hotel & Country Club and Temple Bar Hotel. She is actively involved with the southeast region of the Marketing Institute of Ireland since joining in 2005, and she was chair of the regional branch in 2008-09, where she led a vibrant and highly active team. A keen advocate of continuous professional development, Deirdre has completed programmes with the Irish Management Institute, the Marketing Institute of Ireland and the Public Relations Institute of Ireland. Deirdre is also part of the marketing team that is engaged in promoting Waterford’s hosting of the Tall Ships Races in 2011.

 
 


Paul Kelders

Paul Kelders is Managing Director of jump! innovation and marketing which he founded in 2003, and which assists clients in insight driven innovation, strategy, positioning and research.
They have collaborated with clients across five continents, inspiring radical action for projects as diverse as positioning countries, ‘greening’ brands, theming a 250th birthday, inventing new toothbrushes and co-creating new ways of raising funds for people who are homeless.
Prior to setting up jump!, Paul was Marketing Manager and Consumer Planner for Guinness; Media Director of CDP Advertising and Planner in both McCann-Erickson and McConnells Advertising. Paul is a graduate of the Advertising course at DIT and has worked in the marketing industry for almost 20 years.He joined the Marketing Institute of Ireland in 2003.
 

 

 
Pat McDonaghPat McDonagh is the founder and Managing Director of Ireland's most successful indigenous fast-food group Supermacs, which he established in 1978 and which now employs over 2500 people nationally. Pat is a "hands-on" manager who remains highly involved in the day-to-day running of the business. He has developed his chain of Family Restaurants, which currently stands at 93 outlets nationwide and with sales revenues in excess of €100m. Aside from Supermacs, Pat also operates fifteen Claddagh Irish Pubs in the United States, offering a range of locally brewed drinks and casual dining. In 2005 Pat acquired the franchising rights for Papa John's for Ireland. Pat’s success is notable in that it’s in an industry where large multinationals are powerful and locally based competitors face intense competitive pressure. Pat has demonstrated the power of marketing, and he has been a member of the Institute since 1989.
 
 


Pauric McGowanPauric McGowan, Ph.D, is Professor of Entrepreneurship and Business Development at the University of Ulster, and Director of the NI Centre for Entrepreneurship. Pauric has been responsible for promoting the enterprise agenda across the partnership institutions of the Centre, particularly in faculties of Science, Engineering and Technology. His research interests lie in the area of strategic marketing decision-making in entrepreneurial firms and the role of networked relationships in this activity. Pauric has lectured in the area of Strategic Marketing and Entrepreneurship, published widely on the subject in many international, peer-reviewed journals and presented papers on the topic at research conferences in Europe and North America. He is a member of the editorial boards of three international journals addressing issues of entrepreneurship and marketing, and he is a member of the MCB Literati Club. He is a co-author of an international text on Marketing and Entrepreneurship in SMEs. Pauric joined the Marketing Institute of Ireland in 1987.

 

Fanchea O'ByrneFanchea O’Byrne is Marketing Director of Johnson & Johnson Ireland, responsible for the Consumer Division, which includes iconic brands such as Johnsons Baby, Neutrogena, and Listerine. She joined J&J in 1998 and was appointed Marketing Director in 2003, and sits on the Management Board. Prior to this she worked for Procter & Gamble in the UK for five years in a number of purchasing and sales roles for the Cosmetics and Fragrances division. Fanchea holds a BA in French and Italian from University College Dublin, and a Post Graduate Diploma in Business from the University of Limerick. Fanchea has been a member of the Marketing Institute of Ireland since 2000.
 

 
 

Geraldine O'NeillGeraldine O’Neill is Deputy Managing Director at Edelman and leads the consumer brands practice.Since graduating from University College Galway, Geraldine has worked agency side exclusively and on an eclectic mix of campaigns for many well known brands and companies. In her view, she has been privileged to partner with some of Ireland’s finest marketers to do some very exciting work and her preferred approach, is to work as part of fully integrated teams featuring all disciplines, to crack the brand or company issue or challenge. In 2006, Geraldine acted as Client Relationship manager for Shell, overseeing the work of Edelman offices across 16 markets. She continually seeks out best practice work from Edelman internationally to share with her clients and is proud to be part of a business that has been names Agency of the Year by the Holmes Report. Geraldine has been a member of the Institute since 1999, and she has played a key role in developing the Marketing @ Night event series concept which has proved very successful.
 


Kieran RumleyKieran Rumley has an impressive marketing background in the branded food and drinks sectors of the grocery industry. He is Marketing Director with Batchelors and has held previous marketing positions with Dairygold, C&C and Bulmers. As the grocery industry faces its biggest challenges in decades Kieran holds strongly to the view that well managed Irish brands can succeed and be stronger as they emerge from recession. He is a founding member of the not for profit Love Irish Foods organisation. Kieran acts as mentor to postgraduate marketing students. He is a graduate of the College of Marketing and Design and holds a B.Sc in Management from the University of Dublin, Trinity College and an MSc in Business Administration from the University of Bath. Kieran is a Graduate of the Marketing Institute of Ireland, and he has been a members since 1991.

 
 
 

Tom TrainorTom Trainor is Chief Executive of The Marketing Institute of Ireland. Prior to taking up this position in 2005, he held global revenue responsibilities with Trintech Technologies where he was Executive Vice President Global Sales, and with Kindle Banking Systems. He had previously worked with in the New York office of consultancy firm Cambridge Technology Partners. Tom is a languages graduate with postgraduate qualifications in international marketing. He completed an executive programme at Harvard Business School in 2004. He holds a Master of Arts degree from the University of Limerick, as well as an International Executive MBA from Smurfit Business School at UCD, where he has also completed the Diploma in Corporate Governance.  He is a member of the board of the European Marketing Confederation. Tom has been a member of the Marketing Institute of Ireland since 1991. 

 


Tim McNultyPat Cahill Award 2009
Recipient: Tim McNulty MMII
 
Tim McNulty has been lecturing at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels for over 12 years, at home in Ireland and also abroad including in Beijing. His areas of specialisation include consumer behaviour, international marketing and business strategy. Before entering academia, Tim spent five years in financial services. As a practicing barrister Tim also lectures in Contract Law at Dublin Institute of Technology, and also specialises in the Law of Tort  and Intellectual Property Protection. Tim has in addition been a tutor in Law and International Marketing on the Marketing Institute’s Graduateship Programme. Amongst the reasons for which Tim has been selected to receive the Pat Cahill Award 2009 are his dedication and professionalism in ensuring the success of our long-running Marketing Breakfast event series. Tim has been a member of the Institute since 1997.

 

Pat CahillThe Pat Cahill Award was created by the Marketing Institute of Ireland to recognise the exceptional contribution of individual members to the work of the Institute. The award also honours the memory of our colleague and chairman, who died tragically in a car accident in 2005 aged 38.
