Distance Learning

A Flexible Route to The MII Graduateship

Meeting

Welcome to the new 2009/10 academic year! You can also study for The Marketing Institute Graduateship by Distance Learning.  This route to professional qualification is growing in popularity, and it provides students with the flexibility to study in the comfort of their own home.  You retain control of the study timetable and you can plan your study time allocation around your family, work and other commitments.

Students have extensive access to a team of specialist tutors by phone, e-mail and Internet. Weekend tutorials and special revision weekends ensure that distance students receive support and networking opportunities throughout the year.

Course Format

The Graduateship by Distance Learning is normally taken over a four-year timeframe and it covers the same syllabus and material as the college route.  You progress through each level at your own pace.  Your course materials, which arrive by post, are designed to give you the kind of input you would get from traditional-style lectures.  The workbooks, which are commissioned by the Institute, cover the syllabus in digestible units followed by helpful self-assessment questions and exercises.  The essential textbooks for each module are of course also provided.

On average, there are twelve units in each module.  As a guideline, each unit represents an estimated five hours of study.  We recommend that you cover two units per week (i.e. ten hours of study).  This amounts to six weeks per module.  The Institute examinations take place in May and August.  You may choose to sit exams in May or August or both.

Individual Tutors are appointed to assist you and give you feedback on your progress. The tutor keeps in touch by phone and e-mail to ensure that you are on track with with your studies.

Shortly before the May examinations, the Institute organises Weekend Revision Courses.

Your Investment

The Marketing Institute Graduateship by Distance Learning requires an investment of €1,750 per year for the duration of the course.  This covers all student expenses such as learning materials, tutor support, examinations (May sitting only) and revision weekends.  This includes all the learning materials for all four modules to be taken over the year, including course materials, textbooks, tutorials, weekend revision courses, and May examination fees. Please note that discounts are not available should a student decide not to avail of tutorials, revision courses or the learning materials supplied.

An additional examination fee applies for students sitting examinations in August whether for the first time or as repeats.  The examination fee is €50 for the first subject and €20 for each additional subject.  Please note that overseas students must also cover all additional costs in the set-up of their examinations In the August sitting.

Students may opt to pay by instalment for individual modules. The first instalment is €700, each additional module is €350 and must be paid before the material is forwarded to the student.

Overseas students must pay in advance in one installment per year and may incur an additional carriage charge (€85 within the EU, €120 outside the EU).

Should a student wish to study only one module in any given year, the corresponding payment is €700. If two modules are taken within the same registration year, the payment is €1,050. Three Modules cost €1,400 and four modules cost €1,750. The same pricing applies regardless of the stages of the modules as long as they are taken during the same registration year.  Exemption fees where applicable must be added to the first Module payment.

Tutorials

The schedule consists of 4 x 2-hour tutorials during two Saturdays - 28 November 2009 and
27 February 2010
Download timetable..........

The venue for all tutorials is The Marketing Institute of Ireland, Marketing House, South County Business Park, Leopardstown, Dublin 18.  Directions.........

Each tutorial will deal with a different Module starting at 10am and finishing at 12pm with a 1-hour lunchbreak so as to recommence at 1pm for the second tutorial which will finish at 3pm.  Upon registration each student will receive their timetable and list of tutors together with contact details.

Tutorials are a key component of the distance learning programme. At each tutorial, you review the material you have covered and receive extra notes on key issues and core concepts. By attending tutorials, you confirm that you fully understand the course content by discussing issues with your tutor and fellow students.

Please ensure that you have an active e-mail address that you check regularly for information both from your tutors and from The Marketing Institute.

Revision Weekends

The dates for the 2010 Revision Course are 10/11 and 24/25 April.  See www.mii.ie/revision for all details and booking form.  It is held after the final tutorial and shortly before the May examinations.  This weekend event is not intended to replace tutorials throughout the year, but rather to bring together what you have already learned so as to present it in a format suited to an examination.  During the Revision Weekend we devote one full day to one subject.  You will therefore have seven hours tuition in one subject on the same day.  These weekend events are of vital importance to students and we would strongly urge you to attend.  The Revision Weekend costs are already included in your fees!

Examinations

May examination fees are covered in the Module payments for all Distance Learning students.  However, should you choose to take your examinations in August whether for the first time or as repeats, the examination fees apply (€50 for the first subject, and €20 for each additional subject). Overseas August examinations require an additional fee due to the exceptional administration costs involved.  Please note that examination application forms for the August sitting are only issued on request or can be downloaded from our website.   See section on Examinations.....

Repeats: A student who fails one subject may continue into the following stage and will pay the normal Distance Learning fees.  Examination fees apply as normal.  A student who fails two or more modules, must repeat and pass the exams before continuing their studies.

Carrying Modules Forward: A student who has taken part of one stage and wishes to take the remaining modules of that stage the following year, must start the process again, i.e. €700 for the first module and €350 for each additional module.

Repeating a Year: In order to sit examinations, a candidate must be a registered student. If a student registers for a full year (paying €1,750), receives all the course material and tutorial support but takes no examination or fails two or more of those taken, that student may take the examinations the following year by registering as a 'Home Study Student' for the year.  These students must pay the registration fee by the end of October and the exam(s) fees by March.  The Home Study Student may not avail of Distance Learning Services but is encouraged to form study groups with other similar students.
